The annual Chrism Mass took place last Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at the San Agustin Cathedral’s Santa Monica Hall. Priests representing each of the four deaneries in the Diocese of Laredo attended the Mass which was closed to the public this year as a precautionary measure due to COVID-19. The Most Reverend James A. Tamayo, Bishop of the Diocese of Laredo, blessed three oils: the oil of catechumens (oleum catechumenorum or oleum sanctorum), the oil of the infirm (oleum infirorum), and the holy chrism (sacrum chrisma).
These oils will be used in parishes throughout the Diocese of Laredo over the next year in the administration of the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, the anointing of the sick and holy orders. Following tradition, priests were invited to renew their commitment to their priestly service during the Mass.
Mr. Juan Zamarripa, a candidate to the permanent diaconate was instituted into the Ministry of Acolyte to continue his last year of formation. Mr. Zamarripa was unable to attend the installation with other candidates held last month.
Our hearts turn to our Heavenly Father who bestows His unconditional love and mercy to us through the sacraments. Let us pray for Bishop Tamayo and each of the priests in the Diocese of Laredo who are ministers of the sacraments, that they may continue to be humble and generous servants of the Lord.
(The Chrism Mass traditionally takes place during Holy Week. It was postponed as a result of changes made due to the pandemic.)
