The Diocese of Laredo Catholic Committee on Scouting is a special outreach to youth through the Boy Scouts of America Aztec District and the Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas.
Scouting programs and activities help boys develop character and positive values and instill a devotion to God and country. Schools and churches can allow boys to join a group of children their age from their neighborhood with shared beliefs. In this way, Scouting is a form of Youth Ministry for our Catholic parishes and schools.
Through the collaboration of the Diocese of Laredo and the Boy Scouts of America, the Most Rev. James A. Tamayo, First Bishop of Laredo, has launched the “Together Plan,” an initiative to begin new Cub Scouting units for boys ages 7-10 (Grades 1-5) in various parishes and missions throughout the Diocese of Laredo.

Every other year, the Catholic Committee on Scouting conducts a religious awards program for Boy and Girl Scouts, encouraging their formation in the faith. Scouts earn religious emblems and medals, which are awarded in a special Mass celebrated by Bishop James A. Tamayo in San Agustin Cathedral.
The Light of Christ award is for boys in grades 1-2 and encourages Scouts to develop a personal relationship with Jesus.
The Parvuli Dei award, for grades 3-4, is designed for boys to become more aware of God’s presence in their daily lives.
The Ad Altare Dei award is for boys in grades 6-8 and assists them in developing a thoroughly Christian way of life-based on the seven sacraments.
The Pope Pius XII medal is for high school-age young men (and girls participating in Venture Scoutings). This program deals with church-related ministries and vocations.
Family of God and the I Live My Faith emblems emphasize developing personal relationships with Jesus.
Mary The First Disciple is an emblem earned to help girls explore ministries and vocations.
The Spirit Alive award is for high school youth in the senior level of Girl Scouts. It assists them in discovering how the Holy Spirit moves in their lives, calling them to greater participation in the church’s ministry.
In May 2015, 218 youth and four adults received religious recognition awards during the Bishop’s Award Mass at San Agustin Cathedral.
The Diocese of Laredo Catholic Committee on Scouting, appointed by the Bishop, serves in an advisory capacity and assists the Bishop in promoting youth formation and recognition programs in line with Church values and the upstanding principles of the Scout Program.
